The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has said that construction for more than 25,000 housing units for police officers is underway with some at various levels of completion across four zones in the country.The IGP made the statement at the Oyo State Police Command in Eleyele Command Headquarters, Ibadan on Friday.
In an interview with Channels Television after addressing members of Oyo State Police Command, Mr Arase disclosed that he remained committed to the welfare of the Police throughout Nigeria.
He added that the force headquarters has signed an MOU with UN Habitat and Shelter Afrique in Kenya to build various categories of mass housing schemes capable of reintegrating Police operatives properly into the society during service and after retirement.
Mr Arase sued for the collaboration of well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to shift their focus to help provide basic shelter for the Police and rehabilitate the barracks that are currently in bad shape across the country.
Disclosing that the first phase of 100 units would be ready for use in the first quarter of 2016 and handed over to Police officers, the IGP further encouraged better participation from all and sundry in the fight against terrorism as government alone cannot achieve success without people actively participating.
He added that a new scholarship scheme has also been introduced to help children of Policemen get quality education.
