The Federal Government has sent another set of 78 Nigerian scholars to Russia and
Algeria to pursue their undergraduate and post-graduate degrees under the 2015/2016
Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA).
Speaking during departure briefing/orientation for the scholars in Abuja on 23rd
November, 2015, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony
Gozie Anwuka, restated this present administration’s commitment to the education of
young Nigerians.
The Minister commended the two countries for their support to the Government of
Nigeria in the development of the Education sector. He noted that Nigeria has
enjoyed good bilateral relationship with the two countries, especially in the area of
education. “This event has provided us with opportunity to celebrate our friendship
with these nations,” he said.
He urged the scholars to made good use of the opportunity the award provided and to
be good ambassadors of Nigeria, stressing that there is no provision for extension of
the programme for any reason.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, said that the
Scholarship award is another effort of government to increase access to higher
education for the teeming youth.
She expressed appreciation to the two countries, saying that Russia and Algeria have
not only been consistent in giving the award but gradually increased the number
offered.
The Permanent Secretary counselled the scholars to be of good behaviour and be
patriotic enough to return to Nigeria on completion of their programmes to contribute
their quota to national development.
In a welcome address, Director, Federal Scholarship Board, Ms Ifeoma Agunwa gave
a brief of the processes that culminated to the final selection of the scholars. She
expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the authorities of the Ministry
in particular, for providing the enabling environment for the Board to function.
