Trouble at RCCG? Adeboye shocks pastors pushing to take over from him: “there is no death in my eyes at all”

Yesterday, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, ended the days long activities marking the 74th birthday of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, a ceremony which also coincided with the church’s 30th anniversary.

At the ministers’ conference that preceded the celebrations, Pastor Adeboye surprised ambitious ministers who have long been waiting for him to step down so they can take over when he said “there is no death in my eyes at all.” The revered pastor then advised those who are impatient to kindly leave the church.

Some ministers had campaigned that he resign when he turned 70, Vanguard reports, adding that his food was once poisoned for this and a minister even used juju on the famous General Overseer. But at 74, Adeboye says he is not stepping down anytime soon.

“Anybody who wants to go in anger in future, is hereby advised to leave now because you may not like the one who would succeed me and if you wait till then to leave, it may adversely affect your destiny then,” Pastor Adeboye told the ministers.

On claims by some ministers that it was the church’s constitution for ministers to step down once they turn 70, the church denied this. In his statement to the press, the Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration and Personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola, said the critics were ignorant of the constitution.

“Whereas the constitution provided that the deputy and assistant general overseers are appointed to retire at 70 and enjoy their retirement benefits for life, there is no such provision for the general overseer,” Pastor Odesola said. “People have papers but they don’t read them. We have a compendium about the day to day running of the church but people just don’t read. The people who are agitating for the G.O.’s retirement because he is over 70 years are ignorant and the Bible says you don’t become foolish.”

The bible makes reference to the things Jesus began to teach and to do. I must say Pastor Paul Adefarasin embodies the message of Theophilus to the body of Christ. It's easier to teach via examples than to preach. I do hope to imbibe values such as this.

Four security guards arrested for allegedly stealing N500,000 from tithe box

Yesterday, four security guards  who had been arrested for allegedly stealing the sum of N500,000 from a tithe box, were brought before a Magistrates’ Court in Tinubu, Lagos State.

According to PUNCH, the guards were employed to secure the Ascension Anglican Church in Eti-Osa, Lagos when they conspired to steal N500,000 from the church’s tithe box. Two of the guards were supposed to be on night duty while the other two secured the church during the day when they allegedly stole the tithe box sometime last month, at about 4am.

The accused pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy and stealing during their hearing yesterday and the magistrate, Mr. L. A. Owolabi, granted each of the accused N50,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

The case has been adjourned till March 22.

Baptist pastor shot dead by his younger brother during church service

Yesterday, tragedy struck Dayton, Ohio in the US when a Baptist pastor was reportedly shot and killed by his younger brother during Sunday services.

According to reports, service was ongoing at St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church when 68-year-old Daniel Schooler, who had been sitting in the congregation, suddenly headed for his brother’s office and shot him dead. Police reports revealed that the pastor was the only intended target as no one else was shot or injured.

The victim, Rev. William Schooler was a Vietnam veteran and the principal of a local school for around 20 years before becoming the president of the local Baptist Ministers Union.

An eyewitness recounted how the incident took place: ”The gunman sat down during prayers at the church, then went to the pastor’s office afterward, it wasn’t a minute and I heard two shots, and…I just got everybody out of the church,” she said. “And we just kept hearing shooting, shooting. Bang, bang, bang.”

Police are yet to determine the motive behind the shooting. Daniel Schooler is currently being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bail. Charges against him are expected to be announced on Monday.

Lagos state stops sponsorship of pilgrims to Jerusalem and Mecca

Lagos State Government, on Saturday announced that s would no longer sponsor pilgrims to Mecca and Jerusalem.

The government said the Economic crisis caused by the fall in price of oil necessitated the decision as the state will now have to  invest more on infrastructural development and capacity building .

The state’s Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdulhakeem Abdullateef made this disclosure while addressing  Muslims in Ikeja.

Abdullateef said due to the prevailing  economic downturn it difficult to continue  financing Hajj rites performed by an individual. 

 

At least a million is required to sponsor one person to Hajj.  

“It is better to invest such an amount in the public schools or hospitals for the benefit of Lagos residents and Nigerians at large.

“Individuals intending to visit Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah as well going to Jerusalem should be prepared to bear the economic implications involved, as the state government is resolute about cutting wastages.”

Breaking News: Supreme Court okays Rev King to die by hanging

ABUJA – The Supreme Court has okayed the convicted General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Rev. King to die by hanging. In a unanimous judgment Friday afternoon, a seven-man panel of Justices ‎of the apex court led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, upheld the death sentence that was earlier handed to Ezeugo by the Lagos State High Court. Consequently, the court in its lead verdict that was delivered by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, dismissed the appeal the convicted clergy lodged before it.

Justice Ngwuta who noted that “the ‎facts of the case could have been lifted from horror film”, resolved all the 12 issues Ezeugo raised in his appeal.” “This appeal has no merit. The judgement of the court of appeal is hereby affirmed. The prison sentence that was earlier handed to the appellant is no longer relevant in view of the death sentence passed on him”, Justice Ngwuta held. It will be recalled that Ezeugo was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging on January 11, 2007, for the alleged murder of his church member, Ann Uzoh. He was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder. The charge against him was at the instance of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions. During the trial, the prosecution had argued that the convict poured petrol on the diseased, Uzor and five others. Uzoh died on August 2, 2006, exactly 11 days after the incident. In her judgment, trial Justice Joseph Oyewole who is now a Justice of the Court of Appeal at Calabar, said there was sufficient evidence linking the accused person to the commission of the crime. Consequently, Justice Oyewole convicted and sentenced Ezeugo to 20 years imprisonment for the attempted murder and death by hanging for the offence of murder. Dissatisfied with the judgment, Ezeugo took the case before the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal. The condemned clergy, in his notice of appeal dated January 16, 2007, prayed the appellate court to set aside the judgment. Aside 16 grounds of appeal he raised through his lawyer, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, he was subsequently granted leave to argue additional 16 grounds based an amended notice of appeal he filed on June 15, 2008. Ojo argued that his client did not commit the crime and was not at the scene of the incident. He insisted that the deceased, Uzoh, had in two statements she made after the incident and before her death, stated that she got burnt in a generator accident and that the cleric was not responsible for her injuries. Ojo said the Investigating Police Officer, IPO, had tendered statements which stated that Ezeugo was not responsible for the burns that led to Uzoh’s death. He alleged that the trial Judge refused to admit in evidence, the statements he said exonerated Ezeugo of the crime. The lawyer further contended had those “vital exhibits” been admitted rather than expunged by the trial judge, they would have operated to cast serious doubt on the case of the prosecution. He maintained that Justice Oyewole’s refusal to admit the exhibits in evidence “occasioned a great miscarriage of justice” against his client. Meanwhile, after due consideration of the case, a three-man panel of justices of the appellate court, in a lead judgment that was delivered by Justice Fatimo Akinbami, dismissed Ezeugo’s appeal and upheld the high court verdict. The other members of the appellate court panel that equally concurred with the lower court’s verdict were Justices Amina Augie and Ibrahim Saulawa. Determined to save his life, Rev Ezeugo lodged an appeal before the Supreme Court. His appeal was challenged by the Lagos state government which through its Attorney General, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem and Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Idowu Alakija, urged the apex court to dismiss it and uphold the concurrent verdicts of the two lower courts.

ISIS Threatens Mark Zuckerberg And Jack Dorsey

The terror group vowed retaliation for efforts to suspend ISIS-affiliated social media accounts, Vocativ discovered

ISIS threatened Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey on Wednesday with promises that its hackers are fighting back against efforts to wipe social media platforms of accounts promoting terrorism, Vocativ discovered.

A 25-minute propaganda video showing pictures of Zuckerberg and Dorsey covered with bullet holes was uncovered by Vocativ deep web analysts on the social-media site Telegram, which ISIS frequents. The video is titled “Flames Of The Supporters,” and ends with a direct threat to the two C

EOs.

“You announce daily that you suspend many of our accounts, and to you we say: Is that all you can do? You are not in our league,” text on the video clip reads. “If you close one account we will take 10 in return and soon your names will be erased after we delete your sites, Allah willing, and will know that we say is true.”

Twitter said earlier this month it suspended 125,000 accounts “for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.” Facebook has said that it works to ensure that terrorists don’t use the site, and that it removes content supporting terrorism.

The Islamic State isn’t taking the actions lightly. A group of ISIS hackers calling themselves “the sons of the Caliphate army” released a video on Wednesday claiming to show them hacking Facebook and Twitter accounts by changing profile pictures and posting ISIS materials and propaganda on the platforms. ISIS claims it hacked more than 10,000 Facebook accounts, more than 150 Facebook groups and more than 5,000 accounts on Twitter. “Many of these accounts have been given to supporters,” it says.

The video and its claims are part of the terror group’s war of words in a wider propaganda campaign that has aimed to show defiance against efforts targeting its online operations. A February report by George Washington University Program on Extremism said the amount of pro-ISIS content available on Twitter has been limited by account suspensions since last summer. Suspensions have also devastated the reach of specific ISIS-affiliated users who have been repeatedly targeted, the report said.

Over the last several months, ISIS supporters have responded to efforts to minimize its Twitter reach by moving to other platforms such as the messaging app Telegram. In the past, dating back to at least September 2014, ISIS supporters have called on “lone wolves” to target Twitter employees and even kill Twitter co-founder Dorsey.

T.B. Joshua asks court to stop Lagos State government from prosecuting him

The Registered Trustees of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations, founded by Prophet TB Joshua, have filed a fresh suit to stop the Lagos State Government from going ahead with their prosecution before the Lagos High Court in Ikeja over the death of 116 persons on September 12, 2014 when a six-storey building collapsed on the premises of the church in Ikotun area of the State.In a suit filed before Justice Kazeem Alogba of Ikeja High Court, the Trustees of the church are asking the court to stop their proposed arraignment before Justice Lawal Lateef-Akapo of the same court.

The Lagos State Government had filed 111 counts against the Registered Trustees of SCOAN, two engineers and two companies over the death of the 116 persons. The arraignment of the accused had been scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2016.

But in their fresh action, the applicants are urging Justice Alogba to call for the record of proceedings of a Lagos State Coroner Court, presided by Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, which indicted them and recommended them for criminal prosecutions.

Komolafe, who conducted an inquest into the death of the 116 victims of the SCOAN’s building collapse, had on July 8, 2015 decided that the building which killed them was built without approval, adding that its collapse was due to structural defects. But SCOAN and its engineers – Messrs Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun, rejected the verdict, describing it as unreasonable and one-sided.

In September 2015, Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos dismissed two similar actions filed by the engineers to squash the coroner’s verdict and prevent their arraignment.

In their fresh suit before Justice Alogba, they are seeking a judicial review of the Coroner’s proceedings for the purpose of quashing it. They are also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Attorney General of Lagos State, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, or any officer under his authority from taking any step to enforce the recommendations of the Coroner, including their prosecution.

When the matter came up on Monday before Justice Alogba, the case could not go on as Magistrate Komolafe was absent in court and was not represented by any lawyer. But a lawyer who represented the Attorney General, Barr. A. O Idowu however pleaded with the court for time to file a response to the suit, while Justice Alogba adjourned till February 4, 2016 for hearing.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye Talks about His Death

The annual Holy Ghost Congress of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) ended with cold biblical references by the General Overseer, Pastor E.A Adeboye about death which left his audience in cold shock.

Millions of worshippers in attendance roared in disapproval as Pastor Adeboye, hinted at his possible passing.

The one-week programme ended on Saturday, with a three-in-one service, comprising anointing, communion and impartation. Ministering on the transfer of anointing, Adeboye said he would not be too young at 73 to go back to his creator. He would be 74 in March.

He was explaining why the transferred anointing is always more potent than the index case, using Moses and Elijah as examples. Using the scripture, Adeboye pointed that where Moses, who got his anointing directly from God failed, Joshua, who got his fire from Moses, excelled.

He also cited the case of Prophet Elijah who performed 7 miracles while Elisha who got his anointing from Elijah when God was taking him away, performed 14 miracles.

Adeboye equally explained that the beneficiaries got the transferred anointing when their masters were about passing away.He said he would anoint his wife and other very senior pastors who, in turn, would anoint other pastors, from where the worshippers would experience their own anointing fire.

After the explanation, he looked at the congregation and said:

“you may be wondering if I am about to go. Will it be too early for a 73-year-old man to die? If I go now, who will say it is too early? ”

At this point, the worshippers, who were at the beginning rejecting his passing in a murmur, roared their disapproval loudly from all the four corners of the new auditorium.

Smiling, Adeboye added, “I am not too young to die.” Again, the crowd screamed their disapproval.

He later calmed everyone down, saying: 

“okay, it is not now (I’m not dying now).”

To which the crowd roared a thunderous “Amen.”

Lagos State Govt. Doesn't Want Igbo Traders In Lagos

Early last Wednesday, Oshodi made the news again, with a bulldozer at work. On orders of governor Akinwunmi Ambode, it rumbled through the Owonifari market,Oshodi, Lagos, crushed and flattened everything on sight within the market. But cries of traders at the market, roared louder than the bulldozer which pulled down the market. “I am finished, I just arrived from China with over N20million goods, they have crushed everything. Where will I start from?”

It was a cacophony of noise, curses, abuses mixed with rage and anger. Even by-standers and onlookers did not spare the authorities, as some of them muted abuses on the Ambode-led government for destroying the market with goods worth over one billion naira. A few others said: Traders in Lagos are stubborn, they will never hear, that is good for them!

Kenneth Madu, a trader in the market told Saturday Vanguard that he had been extremely brutalised as he lost everything he had laboured for in the market.

Battling emotion, Madu stated: “I just stocked my shop with new items I brought in from China a few days before the Christmas holiday. When I heard that they have sealed up the market, I rushed down to see if I can evacuate all my goods from the shop. They denied us access into the market and chose to demolish the market with all our goods. I had more than N20million goods in my own shop. Others had more. All attempt to remove our goods failed. I even offered to give the police N200,000 just to allow me remove my goods, they refused. I have been brutalised and traumatised. This is murder, they have killed us.”

He gazed again at what used to be his small shop that contained his over N20million goods leaned back to clear his over-burdened brain of the confusion and said: “This government is wicked and inhuman.”

Asked whether there was any notice to that effect. He stated that there was no notice of the demolition, “they only came to serve a 21-day quit notice that Isopakodowo in Bolade has been provided. But the 21-day quit notice has not expired. Even where they said we should go at Bolade is uncompleted, small and cannot contain all the traders in this market let alone attract the patronage we receive here,” Madu stated.

Another trader, Mr Sunday Obi said: “I heard the government had sealed up the market while I was at home for Christmas, I quickly rushed down, but I got here on Wednesday. They have demolished and destroyed everything I had in the market. I had over N10million worth of goods. I sell wires and electronics in my shops. This morning I came to see if I could pick up a few things from the rubble, but I saw fire everywhere again. Who set fire on what was left?

“We don’t know. But, it means, there was a deliberate attempt for us not to pick up anything from here. If they (governments) don’t want the Igbos in Lagos, they should come out to tell us. How can they demolished the market without allowing us to remove our goods? It is inhuman,” he said.

Obi stated that over 2000 traders had their goods trapped in the demolished market, with huge loses that run into over a billion naira. “About 2000 traders had different goods in the market. I really can’t estimate what we have lost but a modest estimate will be over a billion naira. At a time when people have spent all what they had to re-stock preparation for business in a new year, it is wicked,” he said.

In 2009,Babatunde Fashola, was praised for clearing Oshodi, ridding the areas of miscreants and easing traffic gridlock in the area. Following this development, Ambode who after inauguration said his government will govern with compassion, is perhaps set to conclude the unfinished job BFR started on Oshodi seven years ago.
