Van Gaal set to quit as Manchester United manager

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is considering bringing an end to his coaching career as the pressure mounts at Old Trafford, British press reports.

Van Gaal, 64, who’d insisted he would remain as United boss until the end of his contract in the 2016/17 season despite growing discontent over his cautious and stodgy approach to the game, came very close to throwing the towel during a terrible run last December.

An improvement in results – if not performances – appeared to have eased the strain on the Dutchman, but close sources reveal he wants to call time on his managerial career as it would be best for him, the club and the fans. His decision doesn’t come as a surprise as the club has spent in excess of £250 million under his watch, yet they appear to have regressed, and the Holy Grail of a top four finish is by no means assured.
This has led to mounting speculations that sacked Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could be on his way to Old Trafford, with club officials distancing themselves from Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola who appears to be Man City bound.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone and Tottenham Hotspurs boss Mauricio Pochettino have also been touted for the job, but Mourinho seems to be the ‘Chosen one’ this time around.
