President Muhammadu Buhari has charged Universities to “avoid any corrupt
tendencies and focus on their mission of impacting sound knowledge and conduct of
researches”.
The President said this in his speech at the formal investiture ceremony of the Obi of
Onitsha, His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe as the 7th Chancellor of Ahmadu
Bello University, Zaria.
Represented by Prof. Anthony Anwukah, the Minister of State for Education,
President Buhari observed that the event was “an important moment of celebration
and a moment that invokes the glories of the past and points to the possibilities of a
great future”.
While extolling the sterling qualities of the new Chancellor, President
Buhari also congratulated the new administration and the newly elected university’s
Alumni Association on the auspicious moment, and urged them to doing their best to
keep the flag of the university flying.
In spite of the present security challenges in the country, President Buhari urged the
university to “fully and truly imbibe the culture of peace, harmony and tranquility
which are key elements needed in a scholarly environment”.
In his address, the new Chancellor, Obi Achebe thanked the Federal Government for
deeming him worthy to be chancellor of this “great citadel of education and learning
founded by and named after one of the three founding fathers of modern Nigeria, His
Excellency, the Right Honourable, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto”.
As part of the programme of events, a multi-user Laboratories project, built by the
Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited in collaboration with the University,
was commissioned by the representative of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.
