4 Reasons Why Lagosians Love ‘Owambe’ Parties

Saturdays and indeed weekends in Lagos are usually tagged as “Owambe” because of the vast majority of people who enjoy attending various functions during the weekend.

“Owambe” is a Yoruba word used in reference to celebratory ceremonies ranging from weddings, naming ceremonies, burials, anniversaries and so many other fun ceremonies.

There is also the whole ‘aso-ebi’ craze which has become a very important aspect of these parties.

Nowadays, even with the current state of the economy and people claiming there is no money, folks in Lagos never fail to attend these functions, dressed to the nines in expensive aso-ebi fabrics.

From the flamboyant spraying of cash by both the rich and not so rich to the aso-ebi style show-off and sumptuous party food, Lagosians will do anything to be at every owambe function they can attend.

Also, you are bound to find various kinds of people ranging from the invited guests to the mogbo moya bunch of uninvited groovers who all turn up at these parties for various reasons.

So, why do Lagos folks attend Owambe parties? Here are four pertinent reasons.

1. Free Food
A very important reason why most Lagosians attend owambe’s is because of that signature party Jollof rice. This is mostly because the taste of party Jollof rice is quite distinct and usually more delicious than the regular home-cooked ones.

Apart from the popular party Jollof rice, a variety of other foods are served at these parties which frankly you would hardly cook at home.

I mean, why prepare Chinese rice or small chops at home when you could just wait till the weekend to enjoy these delicacies at an Owambe right? Some people don’t have shame and even go as far as getting take-away in black polythene plastic bags.

2. To Find Potential Wife/Husband
Hey, don’t judge. Not everyone has a potential husband or wife waiting around the corner and an owambe party is usually an opportunity for a search or soulmate.

These parties are usually attended by various calibre and class of people and if there is a chance of meeting someone new who could end up being a spouse, why sit at home and hope for magic that might never happen? Owambe is the way forward, trust me many Lagos folks do this and this hunt has also made catching of the bouquet at weddings war. Lol.

3. To Show-Off Aso Ebi Styles
We all know the aso-ebi fad is here to stay and Lagos women, especially the Yoruba ones, will go as far as spending their last savings just to be the centre of attention.

Owambe parties have become a runway to showcase the most sophisticated aso-ebi styles and trends in fashion. Don’t even let us get started with over-the-top make-up and geles and hairdos you get to see at these functions.

The competition is so high that some women don’t mind stealing the shine from the bride or celebrant.

4. To Turn Up
Lagosians love to turn up! Owambe parties are the perfect opportunity to unwind and get one’s groove on after a long week.

The dancing is usually endless and guests don’t hesitate to show off that latest Naija dance move. Some weddings even organise after-parties for folks who want to rave it up some more after guests have gone home.

Did Funke Akindele Get Married, Secretly?

Nollywood actress and mother to Davido’s protege, Mayokun, Toyin Adewale nearly gave us a heart attack when she posted pictures of herself and fellow colleagues in the traditional aso-ebi and captioned same “Happy married life Funke Akindele, wish you all the best darling,” yeah, like Funke Akindele could manage a secret wedding without us finding out.

The news had our hearts palpitating so fast because rumours have been swirling for a long time that Abdul Rasheed Bello a.k.a JJC Skillz and Funke were dating and even got engaged around his birthday which she celebrated with the singer and his kids in London. Further adding fuel to the news of their alleged relationship was a picture that Akindele posted showing her sporting what looked like an engagement ring on her fourth finger while with the singer

Though no official statement has been released by the Jenifa Diaries star and her alleged lover confirming the status of their relationship, we are on the look out for the slightest indication and will be sure to revert on development around this couple. It should be noted that Mr Skillz made his debut on Funke’s tv series last week playing her love interest.

Well, not if Ms. Akindele and her man finally tie the knots (we’re holding our breaths for them), it will be the Globacom ambassador’s second trip down the aisle as her 3 May 2012 marriage to Kehinde Oloyede, son to the former iyaloja of Oshodi which was a star-studded affair crashed just one year on. The drama surrounding the split could have informed her decision to keep her new relationship under wraps.

Wouldn’t you just love to see Funke and JJC get married?

The Past Came Calling? Jordin Sparks is not Down for that

The past (Derulo or Sage the Gemini) has nothing new to say and Jordin Sparks knows that. The American Idol season 6 winner who recently broke up with Sage the Gemini shared a cheeky picture of herself complete with her tongue sticking out sporting a shirt with the message “When the past calls, let it go to voicemail. It has nothing new to say,” boldly written on her butt.

Sage who initially made a desperate plea on instagram to Jordin to come back after the break up saying “Can’t sit here and act industry like this shit don’t hurt me. You the only girl I can call at 3 in the morning and you’ll answer no problem,” in a leaked video allegedly threatened to stab her seeing that she was unbothered

Well, we think Jordin should not pick up that call from Sage either (i’m so sure it’s Sage. Jason has a girlfriend). Footloose and fancy free is the motto here.

Do you agree?

Burundi Arrests Popular Comedian for Cracking Joke at President’s Nkurunziza

Popular Burundian comedian, Kigingi, was on Friday arrested for cracking a joke at the country’s President, his family has revealed.

The humorist and radio host whose real name is Alfred Aubin Mugenzi was arrested on Tuesday evening by Burundi’s National Intelligence Service (known by its French acronym, SNR) and charged with insulting President Pierre Nkurunziza.

He was arrested at a hotel while on a promotional tour for a beer company.

“He was transferred to Bujumbura and is being held in the SNR dungeons, but no one has been allowed to see him”, a relative who asked not to be named disclosed.

People arrested by the SNR are usually tortured or simply disappear.

Mugenzi was allegedly arrested “for contempt of the head of state” after a skit he performed in neighbouring Rwanda last year, lampooned football-mad Nkurunziza, showing him refusing to leave the pitch despite receiving two yellow cards.

Nkurunziza’s refusal to stand down after two terms and instead run for a controversial third mandate in 2015 triggered bloody unrest in the country. Millions have fled to neighbouring countries as the crackdown on opposition leaders and their supporters intensifies.

An intelligence official confirmed Mugenzi’s arrest saying the comic routine was “insulting the president”.

“He will soon be released, this time,” the official added.

President Obama helps rapper Lin-Manuel with his freestyle

U.S. President Barack Obama is easily the coolest president in the world, if not the coolest ever statesman.

Americans recall with joy how he called out Kanye West for stepping on Taylor Swift’s moment at the 2009 VMA, and his adorable 20th anniversary shout-out to wife Michelle Obama, calling her “the love of my life and best friend”.

Obama’s ‘cool’ moments are endless.

The president, who last year starred as himself in the movie Fixing the System, last night assisted musician Lin-Manuel Miranda in his performance of a government-related rap at the White House.

Obama first performed a brief intro and looked right at home handing cue cards to Miranda during his freestyle.

They performed together in the Rose Garden.

Grammy award winning musical producer Lin-Manuel Miranda is currently performing the role of former President Alexander Hamilton in a Broadway musical. He is also the creator of the musical In the Heights.
There’s always the temptation to compare what obtains in other climes to our system back home. Ever wonder the possibility of President Muhammad Buhari lending a hand to MI in an Aso Rock Villa rap?

Too outrageous? Yes, No?

Nigerian movie maker found dead in bathroom in the US

Ten years ago, Philemon Ihediwa wrote, starred, directed and produced his first movie in the United States. He was one of few Nigerians in the Diaspora that ventured into Hollywood. His movie, CONGO BOY IN THE CITY, featured Nollywood movie stars like Kanayo. O. Kanayo and Madam Gee. Through the years, Philemon struggled to release the epic movie, but was constantly disturbed by the challenges of his divorce and child support payments. He became heartbroken, reclusive and rejected by his children. Ihed, as he was widely known in the US, was chased by the agonies and trauma of child support harassment, allegedly fuelled by his ex- wife’s several court cases against him, in concert with the North Carolina Child support enforcement.

He changed jobs occasionally, as he struggled to pay whopping child support monthly bills. In 2013, Ihed lost everything. He was near homeless, barely living in his storage: he hid his pains and troubles from those close to him until a family member mistakenly found out he was hanging onto life where he stored his little possessions. The family member offered him a place to start life anew. Sometimes in the spring of 2015, Ihed moved to this small road town, Smithfield. He wanted to be far from years of sad memories from his marriage: he began recovery from rejection by his children. He relocated to a small town of Smithfield, North Carolina. On Saturday evening, police found his bloated body in his apartment. He fell on the floor in his bathroom, hitting his head against the bathtub.

Monday evening, Ihed, during a telephone conversation with his female friend, Louise Gorsham, who lived “across town”, hinted that he was not feeling well and would retire to bed early. Ms. Gorsham pleaded with him to call her when he woke up at sunrise. He agreed and they both wished each other goodnight.
“The next day, I called several times throughout the day but he did not respond to my call. I sent text messages. No response. I waited till Wednesday to repeat calls and text messages. I did not hear from him. I was also at work. By Saturday afternoon, after I closed from work, I pleaded with a coworker to drive me to Ihed’s apartment in Smithfield, a thirty minutes ride from Raleigh. I was mad at him. I thought he was ignoring my calls on purpose, might be he had found another lady. But when I got to his apartment, I noticed his car was in his parking space. I began to smell stench coming from his door. I knew something wasn’t right.

“Immediately, I called the Smithfield Police department and requested a welfare check on my friend. The police arrived few minutes later, broke into his apartment and found him dead on the floor, bloated and oozing. My friend died lonely from a broken heart and years of pains from being denied relationships with his children. He loved those kids. Ihed told me many times that his wife had, through the years, barred his children from visiting him. She set them up against their dad while she was busy collecting heavy child support. That man was a very great man. All he wanted was to be a good father to his children. But his ex wife was in the way. Now he is gone.”

Smithfield medical examiner’s office determined that the causes of death were seizure and possible heart attack. It was recorded that “his body was bloated and near decomposition when he was found in his bathroom. The heat in the apartment accelerated decomposition process.” The medical Examiner also concluded that Ihed might have died five days earlier.

Unconfirmed sources say Smithfield police tried several times to reach his ex-wife but she did not return calls placed to her cell phone. His body was deposited in the morgue pending notification of his next of kin, his children, especially the first son.

The Nigerian community in RTP in association with Ngwa Association, on Monday attempted to move his remains to a funeral home to prepare him for burial. But the funeral home indicated that it would only honour the wishes of the family and not community members; to protect itself from any legal fallout. The ex-wife and their first son refused to participate in the burial of their father. On Wednesday afternoon, after several pleas from members of the community to the ex-wife to encourage his 19-year-old first son, sign a release form allowing the community to be responsible for Ihed’s funeral, the ex-wife and first son, George Uche, met Jebose Boulevard at a funeral home to relinquish their rights for the final disposition of their late father.

Jebose Boulevard assumed the right to bury Mr. Ihediwa. This refusal confirmed the conversations trending in this small town that the children rejected and refused Mr. Ihediwa as their father. Jebose Boulevard, Ngwa and the Nigerian community moved his body to the funeral home.

Nigerians in the Research Triangle Park are infuriated about the sad death and circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Family and close members are theorising on what drove him to early death. A member of his extended family, who chose to be anonymous, stated angrily, “Ihed spent every month of the last ten years being taken to family court in Wake County by his ex-wife for child support payment and arrears. He paid about $1,400 in monthly child support to that lady. She dragged him through the system. Ihed worked very hard and suffered to pay child support. The ex-wife accused him of being a superstar, rich and wealthy. This man had his talent and creativity that couldn’t fetch him money because he was abused and stressed by the ex-wife. She took him to the cleaners. He is dead now. What else would she claim?”

What was a bedroom whisper, gossip and innuendo had within few days of his death, become a trending conversation in most Africa’s community melting pots here, grocery stores, or social gatherings, reiterating the heavy child support monthly payments to his wife.

Court documents obtained confirmed several court cases filed by plaintiff (Stella Ihediwa) against defendant (Philemon. N. Ihediwa) with regards to various child support litigations (Case File: 06CV018338). The child support case was still ongoing until his death. In a recent court case filed on April 2014, the court upheld an earlier ruling of $859.00 order against Ihed as child support. Arrears as of April 16th 2014 was $5,664.11.

Between 2007 and 2014, Ihed child support ranged from $1,300 to $859.00, depending on his employment. He also filed few cases seeking child support adjustment, as his employment status changed.

Ihediwa and Stella were married in 1996. The marriage was blessed with three boys. Ten years after their marriage, the couple separated on June 23, 2006. The state of North Carolina granted them certificate of absolute divorce on June 18, 2010.

Ibinabo Fiberesima bursts into tears as Appeal court upholds her five-year jail term

Ibinabo Fiberesima may be going back to jail.

Today, the Court of Appeal in Lagos dismissed the appeal filed by the actress which challenged Lagos High Court judgement sentencing her to five years in prison for the death of Dr. Giwa Suraj.

Recall that in January, the Court of Appeal reserved ruling on the appeal filed by the actress because she was not in attendance. Fiberesima was initially given a fine of N100,000 by Chief magistrate O.A Isaacs for her reckless driving in Lekki, Lagos, which led to the death of a doctor, Giwa Suraj in 2006. But the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olasupo Sasore (SAN), was unsatisfied with the judgement and appealed it at the Lagos High Court. The actress was then slammed with a five-year sentence which she challenged at the Court of Appeal, asking that they revert to the Magistrate Court ruling.

Today, the appellate court dismissed her appeal and affirmed the High Court’s judgment. The Nation reports that the unanimous decision was delivered by Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur, adding that the Magistrate Court lacked the jurisdiction to grant Ibinabo an option of fine.

The former beauty queen today burst into tears as the judgement was read, and her lawyer Nnaemeka Amaechina, said that today’s ruling will be challenged at the Supreme Court, that a Notice of Appeal had already been filed.

To Be More Financial Stable? Be More Discipline!

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I believe to be the central challenge facing our clients right now, along with the rest of our society. It’s not an original concept by any means, but more and more I come to believe that it is the key to unlocking every success principle in existence.
Discipline.
I see the results of real discipline every day. I also see the results of the lack of discipline every day. Here’s what I mean:
Think about anyone who you would consider to have “made it”
You know the person- the woman who is the number one producer in your office and also has a family that loves her and is very close. Maybe you think of the guy who consistently outperforms everyone else and still has time to take numerous vacations AND train for a marathon. Perhaps you are envisioning the manager who genuinely loves developing the team and does a great job of it. Maybe you are considering your own track record right now.
Whomever the example, picture clearly why they popped into your mind as an example of success. Now, if you watched that person very carefully, I guarantee you that you will see that nearly everything they do is purposeful, focused and disciplined. They are disciplined about setting goals and achieving them. They are disciplined about maintaining a great attitude and they’re likely very disciplined about how they use their time.
You’ll notice that when it’s time to work, that individual WORKS- so that when it’s time to play they can do so freely and without baggage.
On the other hand, consider the individual who perpetually seems to get the short end of the stick.
You may know someone who is extremely intelligent, or is very positive and upbeat, or perhaps has a great sense of humor and everyone loves them. Everyone either knows somebody or is somebody who seems like they should be extremely successful in life, but for some reason they just keep struggling and scraping by.
If you watch that person very carefully, the underlying cause is almost always a lack of discipline- about Goals, about their Attitude about how they use their Time, or about how they communicate- or maybe all of the above. Either way, I notice more and more that the most frequently occurring theme in the lives of truly successful men and women is the theme of discipline.
As Albert Gray says in The Common Denominator of Success, they have “formed the habit of doing what unsuccessful people don’t like to do”. They are motivated by pleasing results rather than just pleasing activities. In other words, they are disciplined.
So then what I got thinking about was the question: “What is discipline?”
Well, I had heard once before that the word discipline has the same root as the word disciple. As in “a follower”. Now I didn’t want to get all super-religious or cultish on anyone, so I started thinking about what it actually means to be a disciple. I couldn’t really put my finger on it until recently when the answer was physically handed to me in church. The sermon was called “Majoring in the Minors” and the notes at the bottom read as follows:
“…a disciple is one who stays focused on what really matters, and is careful about letting other less important issues or concerns get in the way.”
Says it all, really. Again, I’m not trying to create some Cult of Personality here. I just encourage you as you begin this day, this week, this month, Your Life- stay focused on what really matters to you- at Work and in Life. Be careful about letting less important issues or concerns get in the way. I urge you…be a disciple of your own success.

Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson mocks the AMVCA: “Most awards in Africa is ‘who they cool with Awards'”

Yesterday, while other celebrities were spotted at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards red carpet, Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson took to Twitter to mock the various movie awards programmes in the continent.

“Most awards in Africa. #whotheycoolwithawards,” she tweeted, adding a laughing emoji. And in another tweet, she completed her statement, “Or peeps they’ll need favors from.”

Nelson’s latest movie, ‘If Tomorrow Never Comes’, which she massively campaigned for last year, did not not make it to the 2016 AMVCA nominee list. And so, hours after her colleagues trooped to this year’s event, she went on Twitter to throw shade.

But she is not the first artiste who have had negative opinions about awards programmes in the continent. Last year, Burna Boy criticised the MTV Africa Music Awards after he didn’t make it to the major nominee list. The reggae-dancehall singer event tweeted at the MTV official handle, querying them on why he was not nominated.

You can read all about that here.

Toke Makinwa opens up: ‘I am single and I need a guy’

In January, Toke Makinwa hinted that she is now single in a playful exchange between her and some fans on Twitter. When asked by a fan if she had fallen in love, she said, “still searching”, and when another said she should avoid chameleons, she added, “I pray o.”

But the OAP is setting the records straight, especially to folks who assumed she had reunited with estranged husband Maje Ayida after they stepped out together for The Future Awards Africa. “I am single, I need a guy,” the popular OAP said in a video recorded at the just-concluded Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards
The 31-year-old’s marriage crumbled last year after Ayida cheated on her and also put his mistress in the family way. On her birthday last year, Ayida sent her a loving note which she responded to, and next, they turned heads at the Future Awards event.

Well, Makinwa is setting the records straight, that she is single, and also she ‘needs a guy’.

So, would you be her lover – yes, no? Cue Banky W’s ‘Be My Lover.’

LOL.

The P-Square messy drama has left a lot of fans disappointed, prompting top stars to wade into it. Last week, Cynthia Morgan was forced to write the Okoye brothers (Jude, Peter and Paul) an open letter and now, Banky Wellington, the CEO of EME records has called for peace.
Banky W had shared the theatrical poster of Paul Okoye’s new artiste Lucy, asking his fans to listen to the lady’s new song. One fan assumed that Paul Okoye signed on Lucy to despise Peter, but Banky W intervened.“It doesn’t mean that,” the EME boss explained. “Jude and Peter each have their own labels for a while now.” And then he listed out the stars signed to Peter and Jude’s label, before adding, “I know they are having issues, but they are still a family and I’m hopeful and optimistic that they will work it out between them.”

Paul Okoye acknowledged this comment. “Respect, brother,” he said.

The Game’s ex-girlfriend India Love claps back at trolls who called her breasts ‘saggy’: “I don’t give a f**k!”

American rapper The Game’s ex-girlfriend India Love has just shut down critics who think her breasts are already sagging. The 18-year-old reality TV star shared new photo of herself on her Instagram page, and her followers had unkind things to say about it.

“Old lady chest cause of implants. It’s gonna get worse when you are actually older,” one follower said, and another added, “wear a bra, saggy titties.”

Well, India Love has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind, and she quickly put the trolls in their place, telling them how contented she is with her body.

“Natural boobs do sag,” the reality TV star said, adding, but obviously, I don’t give a fuck.” And then she made it clear that she never got a boob job done.

See the exchange:

Nicki Minaj reduce the size of her butt? Check her out in new stunning photos

Apart from being the current Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj is known for her famous butt which she unapologetically promotes in her music. She has been called out for trolling skinny women in her song ‘Anaconda’, and her wax figure by Madame Tassauds has her on her fours, with the butt on display.

But there seems to be remarkable change in the ‘Feeling Myself’ rapper. Months ago, at her PinkPrint Tour in Birmingham, she stepped out in very revealing outfit that showed off her full figure. But her new photos which she just uploaded show remarkable difference in the size of her butt, prompting the question: did she reduce the size of the famous butt?

Street Beggar seen driving off in £50,000 Audi TT sports car

35 year old man, Matthew Brinton, a professional beggar in Bank Street, Cornwall, who begs for alms was video taped packing up his 'begging gear' and his into an Audi TT in a car park and driving off in it.

The person who saw him recorded his actions and posted it online, people who saw it got enraged especially those who had given him money and or food in the past, they said they felt betrayed by the scam.

According to Daily Express, contrary to what people thought, Mr. Brinton isn't homeless, he allegedly has a home in Newquay home.
He says since the video was circulated on Facebook, the police has told him that he's had several death threats.

Mr Brinton said:
"I have not seen any of the social media posts because I do not have access to the internet but according to the police I've had lots of death threats.
"People are assuming too much and I'm getting a lot of abuse, which is pushing me to suicide.
"This has been going on for years. "There is only so much someone can take."
Inspector Dave Meredith at Newquay police said:
"He had a few threats, with people making stupid comments on social media.
"We've told him, you need to be careful because of the video on Facebook; there's lots of ill-feeling and animosity because of it".

Some of the Facebook comments supported him while others were against him.

One said: 'Leave the man alone the dog Hazel is well cared for. Vent anger towards what is really making you angry - (it's) awful bullying a vulnerable man'.

One critic said: 'I'm particularly disgusted as he conned £40 from an elderly gentleman I know to 'pay for a B&B' for the night' Then went home! The poor elderly gent was distraught that his kindness had been abused in such a way'.

Another said: ''I brought him hot food and a hot drink was very rude and ungrateful in front of my sons who were 8 and 12 at the time. I told them most homeless people were grateful and not rude like him'.

Another wrote: 'Why judge people you don't have to? He is an ok bloke just lost in life'.

Brinton said the car was left to him by his Grandmother but was stolen soon after the video appeared on social media.
